What is ACT therapy

What is ACT therapy

ACT therapy has six main parts:

Values: ACT places you and your values at the centre of therapy. It is about helping you have a good life despite your suffering.

Action: The life we want rarely happens by accident. Achieving it requires you to commit to action and making it happen.

Unhooking: It is easy for most people to get caught up in pain, fatigue, strong emotions and negative thoughts. We often let these things ‘hook’ us, drag us around and dictate our actions. Having a chronic condition makes this even more likely. ACT therapy helps you make space from your thoughts and feelings to reduce their impact on you, stop them controlling you and allow you to choose your actions.

Mindfulness: When you have a chronic condition, it is easy to dwell on the past or worry about the future. Our pain and fatigue can take us away from the moment and what is important to us. ACT therapy helps build up your mindfulness so you can choose where to place your attention and to get back in the present and making the most of your life.

You are not your condition: ACT therapy helps you see that you are not your pain, fatigue, your condition or the things your negative thoughts might tell you that you are.

Acceptance: Acceptance is a big part of this therapy. Acceptance is not giving up or giving in to your condition. Instead it is having the ability to open up and be willing to experience uncomfortable sensations, thoughts or feelings, if doing so helps you live the life you want.

What to expect from therapy

Therapy is aimed to help you understand your values, life goals and the direction you want your life to go.

❋ Values

Together we will make steps for you to start moving towards those values. One step at a time.

❋ Action

ACT is not designed to remove your pain and fatigue but instead aims to help you be open to your uncomfortable experiences. This way you can reduce your suffering, despite having pain.

❋ Freedom
❋ A Supportive Space

Unlike other therapists, I really understand what you are going through. I have Fibromyalgia and ME and I really understand how deliberating it is.
